I wander around the house looking at various objects, books, old greeting cards, calendars, photos I have made copies of, until something speaks to my heart that this is what I want to draw. Depending on what that is, if it's an object that I'm going to draw freehand, I just set it on a box at eye level and grab my pencils and paper; If it's a copy of a photo, I choose either to trace the outline for a drawing the same size, or use the straight edge/divider method that Darrel teaches (I'm still practicing this method!) if I am going to resize it. I keep the WIP on my desk so that I can keep it fresh in my mind and am always adding or erasing something whenever I have a moment. When I'm frustrated with it, I move it off my desk to the dining room table and leave it alone for a day or two, but am always studying it, wondering about what to do. I'm a little sad whenever I don't have something in progress... like right now. Other things in life get in the way, work projects or whatever, that I want to complete to be able to free up my mind.
